Getting started on Twitter: How do I get followers?

How do I get followers?

You want to have people following you. Your tweets do go into the master Twitter feed but having followers means that people have decided they are interested in what you have to say or share. It also increases the chances that you will be heard and have people reply to your posts or retweet them.

There are tips, tricks or techniques to help you amass a large following quickly. Avoid them.

Instead, I suggest:

  • Be yourself. You are an interesting, unique person with something to say and interests to share. Say what you know and find interesting and others will start to find you.
  • Keep value in mind when you tweet. If you are sharing information or thoughts that others find interesting or useful, they will discover you and follow. See the section “What do I say?” for more.
  • Follow people. When someone sees that you are following them, they will likely check you out to see if they want to follow you.

Note: You may not want some accounts to follow you. They may be the equivalent of Twitter spam or disreputable in another way. Feel free to block them. You won’t show up in the feed of who they follow though they can still see your tweets if they try.
