My look at: How to Engage Youth on the Front Lines of Social Media at #MCC12

  1. I love what is called live tweeting. I prefer to call it event tweeting. I wrote a post this week about how to do it well
  2. Then I then attended My Charity Connects organized by Canada Helps.
  3. What follows is an example of my event tweeting from a session on engaging youth. I’ve also included highlights tweeted by others attending the session.

Session by @JasonShim and @shubsengupta is about using social media when working with youth #mcc12 #nptech
  5. Jason Shim works at Mosaic Counselling in Kitchener.
  6. He’s mostly presenting on his work with Pathways to Education in Kitchener operated by Mosaic.
  7. Here is the slide version.
  8. Here are the event tweets with related videos and links.

Walked into a session lead by @JasonShim and @shubsengupta and I’ve already learned something. I must investigate Google Moderator #mcc12

@JasonShim @shubsengupta working with youth can be compared to icebergs, you only see about 90% of the info you need #MCC12
  11. Communic8nHowe
Shim: 600 teens in Pathways #Kitchener program. Difficult to communicate by phone. Takes about 5 min per student. #mcc12 #nptech
  12. techsoupcanada
Little actions like helping fix a laptop can help build credibility with sceptical directors for other stuff like social media #mcc12
  13. Communic8nHowe
Shim used Flip camera and short interviews to create an intro video for @MosaicUpdates #mcc12 #nptech
  14. Communic8nHowe
Shim: Went to #NTC by @NTENorg with only part funding. Got knowledge to take back to org #mcc12 #nptech
  15. Communic8nHowe
Shim: After using skills to prove worth in what leadership valued he was able to pitch a pilot Facebook page #mcc12 #nptech
  16. Communic8nHowe
Shim: Facebook is the public presentation of self. For teens, Twitter reveals mental process. You can learn a lot #mcc12
  17. Communic8nHowe
Shim: Experiment. Twitter was a failure. There’s been a spike in teen use over the last six months-at least in #Kitchener #mcc12
  18. Communic8nHowe
Shim: They took a passive approach to using Twitter. Tweet by student who had clothes stolen helped them make their needs #mcc12
  19. carolinevireo
we’re all on twitter (teens) it’ll be two years before our parents catch up #mcc12 #youth #sm
  20. Communic8nHowe
Shub: Watch for subtweets use by teens where they are saying something directed to someone but not directly #mcc12 #nptech
  21. Communic8nHowe
Shim: If you want to know what tools teens are using, ask them. If you want to know how they use it. Watch them. #mcc12 #nptech
  22. Communic8nHowe
Shim: You must recipricocate. His most liked FB postings were pics of him as a kid and teen #mcc12
  23. Communic8nHowe
Shub: Be aware of Facebook creeping. Don’t cross a line with youth’s expectations of boundaries. #mcc12
  24. carolinevireo
@JasonShim @shubsengupta students don’t care about your organization, they care about you (the staff who work there) #mcc12
  25. tierneys
Agreed! RT @amandabella: @Wind videos made by Pathways to Education in KW with @jasonshim’s team are so hilarious and effective #mcc12
  26. Communic8nHowe
Shim: Helped get support to win online grant contest with videos. Included a clickable link in the video as call to action. #mcc12 #nptech
  27. Communic8nHowe
Shim gave Shub the keys to post updates on SM to help with the contest. Helped to engage him in campaign #mcc12
  28. Communic8nHowe
Shim: Distinguish between policy to deal with what could go wrong and guidelines to give to new staff and are easier to change #mcc12
  29. techsoupcanada
Be prepared to constantly justify your social media policy and why certain rules are needed, or be open to changing it #mcc12
  30. Communic8nHowe
Shim: Go to where the students are instead of creating something new or using something like Pinterest which they aren’t using #mcc12
  31. Communic8nHowe
Shim recommends Remind as an SMS tool for teachers or Frontline SMS. I suggest looking at @Spike_Mobile too. #mcc12 #nptech
  32. Communic8nHowe
Keep in mind the teens that are not active on social media and who can’t win tickets offered that way #digitaldivide #mcc12
  33. Communic8nHowe
QR codes are dead according to @JasonShim. I say they have value if used properly (see my blog posts) #mcc12
  34. Here are the QR code posts I referred to in my tweet.
  35. Back to my event tweeting
  36. amandabella
Hold on, everything has changed. @jasonshim is Yoda. Or at least, his impression is pretty damn amazing #mcc12
  37. Communic8nHowe
Shim: Advises orgs offering scholarships to use online forms instead of downloadable PDFs #mcc12 #nptech
  38. Communic8nHowe
Thanks @JasonShim and @shubsengupta. That session alone worth coming to #mcc12. An #smbWR version in the fall?
  39. Overwhelmed by all the great session tweets - what a fun audience to present to! Thx @shubsengupta for helping build the wings. #mcc12
