My 2013 communications resolutions

It almost seems a bit late for a resolution post but I’m just coming back from a holiday break with my family. So I’m taking a moment now to wish you a Happy New Year!

In 2013, my personal communications resolutions are to implement ideas I discovered in 2012 but haven’t had a chance to pursue yet.

A new e-mail system

Just as Communicate & Howe! has matured and moved to a new website solution, it is time to move to a more sophisticated e-mail system especially since I’m a big believer in the importance of e-mail marketing. At Social Media Breakast: Waterloo Region’s All Day Breakfast, Natalie MacNeil highly recommended AWeber. So I am going to use it and see if I believe it is a better option for my firm.

I’ll also explore how to grow my list through my website.

A greater emphasis upon Search Engine Optimization

I’m a big believer in a genuine, organic approach to search engine optimization. I believe that if you are using the terms that people are searching for then they will find you. I advocate blogging as a way to ensure that you are regularly using those words and phrases and providing search engines with their desired fresh content. This approach is working for me. I am regularly found in search engines and that’s a big reason why many posts regularly appear on my monthly or yearly lists of my most read posts.

But in order to take my business to the next level, I want to make it even easier for people to find me. I want them to learn about my expertise in nonprofit communications especially social media and to benefit from the free strategic communications advice that I share. I hope to build a larger client list and be invited to speak more often.

I have come to the conclusion that I need to place a greater emphasis on search engine optimization to help my audience find my great content that I’m effectively sharing through social media.

When Gini Dietrich wrote a post related to this topic, I asked her for advice and she recommended Scribe SEO or Yoast. I think I’ll try Yoast first because it has a free WordPress plugin.

Spend more time investigating metric tools

Since I signed up for Google Analytics, I haven’t had the chance to explore it much so I plan to give it more attention. I’m especially interested in starting to use it to establish goals and determine if I am achieving them.

I also plan to spend more time seeing how tools like Jugnoo or Squeeze can help me-especially as metrics tools for my social media use.

New learning opportunities for you

I also have in development some new learning opportunities for you including offering webinars and access to some of the best minds around. Stay tuned for details!
